Reporter-Senior Journalist (Gulf), BBC Arabic
BBC Arabic is the largest of the BBC’s forty language services, providing accurate and impartial news, current affairs and programmes on TV, Digital, Social Media and Radio to our Arabic speaking audiences in the Middle East and across the world, 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
We’re changing. We want our output to be more contemporary in style with an outlook which adheres to BBC values.
Whilst we aim to have a broad appeal and to be free from commercial, political and religious affiliations or pressures, we are keen to grow our younger and female audiences to ensure our output reflects the lives and aspirations of all our audiences.
We are looking for a Reporter-Senior Journalist with experience of reporting in the Gulf to join our friendly team based in Beirut. This is a continuing contract on local terms and conditions.
Based in Lebanon your role as Reporter-Senior Journalist is to provide timely, expert and authoritative coverage of news and current affairs events in the Gulf for TV, digital, social media and radio, in Arabic and English. You may also be asked to report on the Middle East and other parts of the world and may be deployed outside Lebanon and the Gulf as required.
You will have an excellent network of contacts and access to news-makers and be able to supply interesting and compelling material for broadcast and digital distribution in classical Arabic and fluent broadcast-standard English.
We look to you to report in an engaging and thought-provoking manner which appeals to our target audiences covering not just the day to day political changes but developments in technology, health, business, arts, human interest and sports.
You will be deployed to often hostile locations at short notice and must be prepared to report on breaking news.
The Ideal Candidate
Our successful candidate will be a fluent Arabic speaker and writer, with a strong journalistic and reporting background. An excellent command of English is essential.
Experience of live and recorded location reporting, co-presenting and studio treatments such as presenting graphic sequences and on-set explainers and acting as a "presenter’s friend" for analysis and updates is important.
You must have a thorough knowledge of Gulf affairs together with an understanding of the Arab world and international affairs. You will have a strong broadcasting voice and a track record of accuracy and impartiality. Experience of reporting in the field on issues in the Gulf is important.
We are particularly keen to hear from applicants from the Gulf region.
BBC World Service is committed to promoting Equality and Diversity among our employees and developing a positive culture where everyone can develop their full potential across BBC divisions. We welcome and encourage applications from people from all different backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from female candidates, as staff from this specific group are currently under-represented.
