Radio Journalism Coordinator, Cairo

Job Introduction

BBC Arabic is a multi-platform service, providing news and information to audiences across the Arab world and beyond on Radio, TV and Online, 24 hours per day. The output is modern in style and outlook and adheres to BBC values of accuracy and impartiality. It requires a number of radio presenters to work on a range of output including news programmes, news bulletins and current affairs programmes.

We are looking for a Journalist Coordinator who will work to the Senior Journalist in shaping on-the-day content for BBC Arabic both digitally and on radio.

You will be part of the editorial team in the BBC Cairo Bureau for BBC Arabic Radio. We are responsible for carrying out editorial and technical tasks and to ensure radio news & programmes, and online and social media content (including video for web) produced from the location conforms to BBC Editorial Guidelines.

This role requires willingness to work on a variable rota which operates 7 days per week, 365 days per years. Shifts include early morning starts, late evening finishes and night shifts.

Role Responsibility

Some of your main responsibilities within this role will involve:

  • Undertaking factual research to a broad or specific brief, using a wide range of sources
  • Acting as a point of contact within for the team and make arrangements for outside contributors
  • Maintaining accurate archives and build up a list of contacts.
  • Assisting in studio production, online production and interactivity, to co-ordinate and liaise between editorial production and technical staff
  • Selecting and editing public contributions to BBC output, and contribute suggestions for treatments of stories
  • Assisting in moderating social media platforms, maintaining BBC Arabic online and social media  content and managing cross promotion with other BBC pages.
  • Undertaking general administrative work and ensuring contributor payments are made in a timely and accurate way
  • Undertaking translation work, under supervision, as requested for Online or Radio
  • Assisting in achieving  BBC  objectives for Diversity

Depending on experience, on occasions and under supervision of editorial production staff, you may be doing interviews, editing programmes, and operate recording/editing equipment.

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have recent experience of working in a news room, and  good understanding of broadcast media. You have excellent search skills on the web and knowledge of social media platforms. You have the ability to work independently and within a team with developed communication skills. You have experience of using  operational and technical programmes. Excellent written and spoken Arabic and English are a must.
