News Editor, Indonesian Service
BBC World Service is an international multimedia broadcaster, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services and working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences. It uses multiple platforms to reach its weekly audience of 320 million globally, including TV, digital platforms including social media, AM, FM, shortwave, digital satellite and cable channels. BBC Indonesia is part of the 16 services of the Asia Region and is spread across Jakarta and London.
We are recruiting for a News Editor to join the team in Jakarta.
Reporting to the Asia Regional Editor, your role is to lead a team of journalists in Jakarta and London, manage the bureau and contribute to the overall strategy and direction of BBC Indonesian Service. You will have overall responsibility for editorial output of the Service, ensuring content meets the highest standards of journalism and is relevant to our audiences. You will be responsible for achieving digital transformation in the Indonesian Service while maintaining existing radio platforms and expansion into TV. You will oversee budgets and be accountable for cost savings across the service. We expect you to lead, motivate and develop staff in the bureau to produce award-winning journalism.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be a fluent Bahasa Indonesian and English speaker and writer, with proven experience in a senior journalistic role. A full understanding of news and current affairs in the target region and globally is essential. TV experience is desirable. You will have extensive knowledge of digital forms of journalism relevant to our audience and the trends in the Indonesian media marketplace. You will need to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of analytics tools and the use of metrics as means of measuring growth against targets. You will have highly developed communication skills and the ability to motivate and develop editorial staff to make innovative and imaginative content. You will need the ability to make major decisions with authority and under pressure with a particular regard to managing risk and ensuring the safety of our staff. You will also be able to manage resources, staff, technical facilities and budgets, in order to make creative programmes in the most cost effective manner.
